BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING

One unexpected question I was asked about a character in fiction-romance novel, Dismantled Hearts, was, "Why did I make her successful?" I tried to understand the logic behind the question but admit I'm still trying to grasp it. I responded by explaining that I started the book from the character's current situation, not from where she had been. While her past struggles were briefly highlighted in the book, I wanted to show her evolution rather than keeping her in a state of hardship. This question made me reflect on how some people view success. They often see having nice things and living a prosperous life as negative. Iโ€™ve never really understood this. It could be a matter of mindset. I believe there's nothing wrong with having wealth as long as it doesn't control or change you for the worse.

Being a Giver

Every few years, God elevates me to a new level, which often includes an increase in income. I am forever grateful for the Lord's provision and continuous prosperity, knowing that He wants us to live fruitful lives. One thing I've noticed about myself, and that others often point out is that no matter where I am in life, I remain humble and generous. I love helping others and willing to be a blessing when I can.

I view money as a tool that can be used to make an impact and while I appreciate paying my bills and living comfortably, my greatest fulfillment comes from helping others. When I know someone is in need and I can help, I do so discreetly. A humble person doesn't make announcements about their generosity, as it defeats the purpose and draws attention to themselves. Others usually do the talking and acknowledge you, so there's no need for a PSA. That's what "Blessed to be a Blessing" means: allowing God to use you as a source to meet others' needs.

Learning to Receive

Even though I love helping others, I've noticed something about myself recently. I remember a friend wanting to do something for my birthday because she said I'm always doing for others, so she wanted to return the favor. I declined her offer, suggesting she keep her money for her own needs. Similarly, a family member insisted on giving me money, which I passed on to my son, as he needed it more. When the family member discovered this, he was upset, expressing that he just wanted to do something special for me, yet I couldn't accept it.

Reflecting on these incidents, I asked myself why. I realized I've always been a giver and struggle with receiving. I had to really check myself on this and allow others to do things for me and to accept their kindness. In these instances, and possibly others, that I may not recall, individuals were blessed and wanted to be a blessing to me and I couldn't even accept it. Not too long ago, someone surprised me and blessed me with a nice gift. My excitement was evident as I welcomed it with open arms, filled with happiness. Reflecting on this moment, I see that any progress I've made in this area has come directly from the prior eye-opening experiences. From here on out, I am open to receiving from others.

Check your ego

Proverbs 16:18 (MSG) states, "First pride, then the crash - the bigger the ego, the harder the fall." This is such truth and it's a shame because that's all I see on social media these days and its sad because its more women than men I see with the big egos. Some people seek success just to prove themselves, please their ego, and show theyโ€™ve made it. This mindset can lead to selling your soul just to chase a bag, doing whatever it takes to maintain that lifestyle. Being a good steward of opportunities and increase is essential, but there's a distinction between sharing and flaunting for attention. It all comes down to the heart's intent and purpose behind it. I'm happy with what the Lord is doing in my life and future promises, but I don't want to get so blessed I become all about self. I understand my mission is to help others and not to be boastful about it as materialistic things will fade away.

Final thoughts

I think many people believe that success is not of God and that the more people prosper, the further they get away from Him. This may be true for some, but not for everyone. This is why itโ€™s important to be deeply rooted and have a relationship with God early on so that as you progress, you donโ€™t lose sight of your true source. Reflecting on my journey, I see that every advancement has come directly from God without me having to ask for it. I never pray for success, advancement, money, material things, or even influence. When you seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, all these things will be added unto you (Matthew 6:33 KJV).

When you have a heart of humility, God will give you blessings that only come from Him, that you won't have to struggle to keep or maintain because He knows He can trust you to do what's right with it. When blessed beyond measure, it truly is for you to make a difference in the world. This doesn't mean you sacrifice your own needs and wants but that you consider others as well, including your future legacy. I'm looking forward to the day when I can make a significant impact and bless others on a larger scale. When you are blessed, those around you will benefit from it. This is why itโ€™s important not to speak negatively about people; your next blessing could be tied to that person, and you could miss out or feel guilty for judging them prematurely. This is why people are blessed, so they can be a blessing to you! Think about this the next time you gossip about someone.

Until next time!
